As Chicote recalled at an event held in Madrid as part of the DiabetesPorTuCorazón campaign, an initiative by Boehringer Ingelheim to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of food for diabetics, “healthy cooking is not boring eating”. During the act, Miguel Ángel Brito, specialist in Endocrinology at the Puerta de Hierro University Hospital, Madrid, spoke about the importance of the information these patients receive to improve their quality of life. “Many doctors assume that the patient knows everything that this disease entails, but the reality is that it is not.”
The patient knows that he has to improve his diet and reduce sugar consumption, for example, but “he is unaware that type 2 diabetes is associated with other cardiovascular risk factors and that it increases the risk of suffering from other diseases.” And it is that these patients are more at risk of suffering serious cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction or stroke, among others.
In this sense, Brito has explained to the attendees the relationship between type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk, and has given advice to take care of heart health if you suffer from the disease. Type 2 diabetes is a cardiovascular risk factor, like hypertension, tobacco or cholesterol, it is one of the factors associated with the disease and is very heavy. Our goal with patients is to see if they have other associated risk factors and to try to neutralize them. ”
In addition, he noted that “there are a number of guidelines that are important for the diabetic patient with associated cardiovascular risk: weight control, it is vitally important to avoid being overweight and obese, to have a non-sedentary life, and if possible, to do exercise.
