Less than 300 meters separate two of the most important scenarios in Apple’s history. Steve Jobs got on the first one, at the Moscone convention center in San Francisco, in January 2007 to present the product that forever transformed the company, the iPhone.

On the second, the audience of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Jobs came three years later, on January 27, 2010, visibly thinner and physically exhausted after a liver transplant he had undergone a few months before. It was a more intimate event than the iPhone, with only about 200 journalists from around the world.

At some point the company’s engineers realized that the concept could be reduced and transformed into a phone but here the tablet was now, with all its potential developed and in dimensions that opened up new possibilities for interaction.

The name was mocked for months (pad is the name that the compresses receive in English) and many criticized that the device was no more than ‘a large iPhone’ and that ‘it only served to consume’, despite the fact that a good part of the presentation of Jobs was dedicated to the collection of apps iWork and that among the first official accessories was a keyboard. Even so, sales in the first months exceeded all expectations. Apple sold in 2010 almost 8 million units, more than 30 million in 2011, almost 60 million in 2012 … the growth curve in the early years exceeded that of the iPhone.

The market cooled in 2013. The iPad had entered strongly in many homes but few found reasons to renew it. They continued to fulfill their function and, unlike the telephone, did not have operator subsidies that encouraged the change every 24 months. It was the best selling tablet on the market – it has not stopped being it in any quarter since its launch – but the tablet market began to show signs of exhaustion.

The company soon sensed that the iPad could have an important market in the education sector and maneuvered to position itself as a tablet in schools and universities. It did not work. The Chromebooks, cheaper and with the support of more complete software, eventually imposed themselves in the US.

The erratic behavior of its rivals did not help either. Google tried to present Android as a platform also suitable for tablets but none of the manufacturers’ proposals got the same traction or aroused the interest of app and game developers. Only Amazon has managed over time, and betting heavily on very low prices, have a significant market presence.

Microsoft tried to give a new spin to the concept of the TabletPC with the launch of Windows 8 and the first Surface devices, but they were still very green compared to the Apple alternative, which was born with a catalog of hundreds of thousands of compatible applications and many of them specifically developed to take advantage of the larger screen dimensions. Over time it has managed to make Surface a line of very capable devices, but the beginnings were hard.

In recent years Apple has diversified the catalog trying to boost sales again. It seems to have had some success recently, with the introduction of an iPad Pro line, designed for more advanced users, and the decision to differentiate the operating system from the version used by the iPhone. After years stagnant, the iPad, which accounts for around 10% of Apple’s revenue, grows again. It is not going to be a business as big as the iPhone (nothing can match it) but it cannot be denied that the company has found what it was looking for, a third class of device that is neither a telephone nor a PC, but that fits into the needs of millions of people, sometimes better than conventional computers.
